A rural innovation practice

What is The Rural Lab?

A place for rural builders, dreamers, and systems-changers to test what's possible.

A rainbow above a red shed and pine trees in northern Minnesota.

The Rural Lab is not a building. It's not a grant program or a startup incubator. It's something quieter, more experimental—a lab in the truest sense, and a way of working with ideas that matter to rural places.

At its core, The Rural Lab treats ideas like living things. We observe them, shape them, and see what they want to become. Some move toward formation through community insight, design thinking, and field testing. Others settle into a respectful pause. A few reach sunset, concluding with gratitude for what they revealed along the way.

We borrow from the scientific method: test, learn, refine. But our variables are people, place, and culture. Our experiments live in real communities. This isn't about scale for the sake of scale. It's about fit, impact, and the deep satisfaction of a solution that feels like it belongs here.

How the lab works

From insight to action—or a thoughtful pause.

01

Innovation Workshopping

We gather the raw insight—what someone is seeing, feeling, or noticing—and turn it over together. The work is structured but creative, making room for iteration, disagreement, and collaborative design.

02

Taskforce Assembly

When an idea carries enough weight, we build a focused team of residents, stakeholders, and subject-matter guides. These nimble groups learn by doing, then share what they find.

03

Knowledge Sharing

We reflect on what the work revealed and make it useful to others through reports, conversations, visual summaries, talks, and toolkits that can travel, evolve, and be remixed.
